Philippines: Residents Rush to Stores Ahead of Typhoon Kalmaegi 2

Typhoon Kalmaegi swept across the central Philippines, killing one person, flooding communities, cutting power, and displacing tens of thousands after making landfall around midnight over Silago in Southern Leyte early on November 4. The storm reached typhoon strength shortly before landfall, with winds of up to 150 kph and gusts reaching 185 kph. Canada: Smoke Blankets Prairies as Wildfires Continue to Rage 2

Massive wildfires continue to rage across Manitoba and Saskatchewan, forcing thousands to evacuate and prompting both provinces to declare a state of emergency. Thick plumes of smoke from these blazes have blanketed the region and spread to the upper Midwest of the U.S., where Minnesota’s Pollution Control Agency warned they are expected to last through the first few days of June.

Choe Pu Il, the North Korean minister of people's security, apologies to bereaved families and residents in Pyongyang on May 17, 2014, after an apartment building under construction collapsed May 13 and claimed the lives of an unspecified number of people. The country's state media reported the accident on May 18.
